The cooperative project "MINIS" of the Institute of Transport Logistics (ITL) and the chairs of Industrial Information Management (IIM) and Corporate Logistics (LFO) aims to create a miniaturized production and logistics system based on additive manufacturing and LEGO® MINDSTORMS® as a demonstrator for teaching and research purposes. The students have the opportunity to design, construct and manufacture the elements of the miniaturized system themselves. The overall goal is to use the demonstrator to present real-world problems in an understandable way.

Description

The increasingly complex tasks of logistics are mostly abstract and real problems can only be shown in teaching through case studies and multimedia presentations. The approach of creating a fully functional production and logistics system in miniature offers the potential to represent complex interrelationships in a tangible way. The technology of 3D printing (additive or generative manufacturing) makes it possible for students to design, construct and actually create the elements of the miniaturized system themselves. In student works (project, bachelor's and master's theses), the individual building blocks of the overall system are developed and will be available for use and demonstration of concrete theoretical relationships on the real system in other University courses.

Within the ITL, the department "Simulation and Logistics Engineering" is in charge of this cooperative project. The work at the ITL focuses on constructing a physical demonstrator in the form of a miniaturized container terminal and a train connection on the one hand and on developing a digital simulation landscape on the other hand. These efforts are intended to create opportunities to develop application-oriented teaching and learning content.
